Cycling and football, my favorite sports, restarted after the Covid pandemic. Looking back at 18 months of lock-downs and restrictive measures, both sports basically remained the same, only the fan experience around both sports have proven so completely different!

Watching a football game without an audience is like watching a glorified preseason practice game. There is no taste or crack. When playing football I miss the audience so much and for me watching football on TV has become quite sleep-inducing during corona. How different it is in cycling.
The experience of cycling on TV has (fortunately) remained largely the same for me. It was a wonderful Tour de France with a legendary denouement. Also during Gent-Wevelgem it was fun again from the couch. The icing on the cake was a breathtaking Tour of Flanders. And unlike football, I don't miss the massive crowd during the mountain stages. In fact, it has become a lot safer for the riders themselves. And for me as a viewer a lot more relaxing and less annoying.
Where would cycling be without sponsors?
The appeal of cycling has not diminished for me as a fan under the current circumstances. Let's hope other cycling fans feel the same way. Then it will certainly be good for cycling in the coming years. Especially if the fans are willing to contribute to the success.
What remains worrisome is the high degree of dependence on sponsors in cycling. The corona crisis will undoubtedly leave its mark and companies are less willing to invest a large sum of money in professional cycling teams. Teams that are able to create more balance in the income streams are more likely to survive for a longer period of time. Cycling fans can play a crucial role in this, provided these fans are also activated to provide their (financial) support.
